Conversations With Birds

Conversations With Birds is an ongoing project that flies beyond the humdrum of routine domesticated life, far past the frantic pace of the modern world, and lands in the wild places of the natural world. Where serenity and freedom dance on the breeze and beautiful birds sing their aliveness.

Does the magpie cry

when its feathers don’t look pretty

Does the swallow wallow

for days in its own self pity

Does the crane complain

when its thoughts keep it up at night

Does the currawong do wrong

does it even know what’s right

Does the seagull mull

over whether to steal a chip

Does the wren ever pen

its tales of woe and hardship

Does the cockatiel ever feel

that its days are too intense

Does the duck get in a muck

when life just doesn’t make sense

I guess there’s certain things we’ll never know

but with the birds we can be sure

They get on with life because life gets on

as it always has before

And just as things come up

just as soon they will pass by

And when the sun comes up tomorrow

the birds will be back up in the sky

Perhaps the dove will fall in love

at the end of a life long search

Maybe the crow will decide to go

and find home on a faraway perch

Perhaps the albatross will cross

an ocean once beyond its measure

Maybe the tern will start to learn

how to live its life in pleasure

Yes the hawk will likely talk

about earth’s beauty from the air

And the lorikeet will surely tweet

its squawky songs without a care

And though their lives may seem small

every bird has its own special way

In playing an important role

in the harmony of each day

Some days they'll fly with grace and speed

others they’ll ache and hurt and bleed

Some days they’ll paddle and waddle and wade

others they’ll be hungry, cold and afraid

But whatever Mother Nature sends in their direction

they trust it comes with love and affection

For there is still so much they don’t yet know

many lessons to learn and more room to grow

So there’s one simple thing you must never forget

when life gets you down and you start to fret

When you’re muddled and fuddled and lost for words

just take a deep breath….

...and look to the birds.
