Little Pied Cormorant

You will see the Cormorant by the water, in some ways it’s a bit like a duck.

Though unlike a duck, it doesn't float so well. The duck has oily feathers, so the water runs right off. Hence the saying... “water off a duck’s back”.

But the Cormorant doesn’t have the oil. So when it dives under water, its feathers get soaked and awfully heavy. As such, you will often see them perched with their wings spread, drying in the sun.

What might seem like a flaw in their engineering, is actually a competitive advantage. Because this heaviness means they can dive deeper than ducks, to where lots of nutrition can be found.

However, it leaves them tired and heavy. They must rest and dry their wings.

The Cormorant reminds us that when we dive deep into life, we're likely to be rewarded with nutrition for our effort. But after the dive, we must allow ourselves time to rest. Time to perch in the sun and dry our wings, ready for the next dive.

Do you feel like you're constantly moving on to the next thing? Could you allow yourself more time to rest and dry your wings?
