Superb Fairy Wren
Pictured here, a male Superb Fairy Wren, performing a full-spirited mating call.
Following these birds in courting season was like being on the scene of a David Attenborough documentary. During courtship, a male's feathers go their brightest shade of blue, not to attract the female, but rather, to make them more visible to predators. It's a display of courage. They will also brazenly perform their mating call with a predator in close proximity. The bad boy gets the bird. They literally flirt with danger, in every sense of the word.
I watched with my very own eyes a male wren pull up beneath a perched Kookaburra, take a little breath, and bellow its mating call. Kookaburras, whilst having a diet of mostly insects and reptiles, can be a threat to small birds on the ground.
The Superb Fairy Wren reminds us to be bold in pursuit of our dreams. Sometimes the most special things wait behind what we're most afraid of. Sometimes the greatest rewards hide behind our biggest insecurities. We learn so much from experience, from having a go at things. We often learn more from failure than we do from success.
Is there something in your life you've always wanted to do, stymied thus far by fear? Is there a dream you've never realised? What would it take for you to find the courage to make a genuine attempt? Have you been waiting for a sign from the universe?
Well here is that sign. Be bold like the Superb Fairy Wren. Flirt with danger and see if the sparks fly.
